Goodbye Radio

It's unfortunately right on the nose that my bidding adieu to radio comes at a time where many of my professional peers find themselves in a job market that has been unpleasant for so many. Truthfully, that's a trend that has contributed to me saying farewell as it has become a very sad annual occurrence. While I had officially left radio for a career switch last year that ended up in legal pursuit, it was not done with the door closed on radio. However, now the microphone is turned off as I leave the broadcasting booth for the sideline.

While I dabbled in a few odds and ends jobs in my youth I had been very lucky to not of had to search for too long to find my career. I first got into radio in high school, was able to do it in college which led to an internship that led to the start of my career. Lafayette, Las Cruces, Logan and Augusta is where my career has taken me. I've worked with great people, met great audience members, found my lovely wife and it afforded me the luxury of being able to see the world. Just as importantly, it was the vehicle that allowed me to tap into my passion, ambition and dedication.

Those traits were always in me but I lacked the maturity and direction to tap into them, and that's a big part of the story of my long tenure at Purdue University. However, that journey is what ultimately made them stick and a course correction that was desperately needed. I wouldn't trade it for anything because lessons learned through hardship are much harder to forget and have served me well. Almost 20 years is hard to argue with but I'm on to the next chapter.

While I loved so many of the things that came with being in broadcasting, especially microphone therapy, sports was always my reason for getting into media. I even dabbled in print journalism before falling in love with radio. I even got to achieve a dream when I was part of the broadcast team for the division one Utah State University women's basketball team. And in covering sports I found something else I had an interest in that I now get to pursue.

I have officially accepted the assistant coaching position for the men's basketball team at KVCC. Being close to sports really kindled a fire for trying my hand at coaching but the timing for a few opportunities didn't quite work out. Now, my coaching career officially starts as I join coach Kenna's staff and I couldn't be more excited to be part of the Lynx team. An upstart coach joining an upstart program feels like luck striking at the perfect timing.

I'd like to thank radio for all the experiences and joy I've gotten from it and wish good luck for my peers who may face a similar situation as myself. 20 years is a good run, and making a career change doesn't lack some anxiety, but I'm lucky to get an opportunity in a field that has a limited opportunities and cannot wait for another two decades plus career. Make sure you join us in Fairfield and go Lynx!
